The
best way to talk to Chesney is via His Myspace site. Which is www.myspace.com/chesneyhawkesmyspace
1.
What is the most bizarre thing that has happened while being on the road
last year?
The
most bizarre thing was probably when we were playing in Aberystwyth. We
get a lot of things thrown onto the stage all the time, Toys, flowers,
knickers, bras, boxer shorts but never before had I experienced a pantomime
horse's head flying towards me. Our bass player, Stuee, actually put it
on for the rest of the song! Strangely enough, a pantomime cow also joined
us on stage in Aberdeen. I see a trend here.
2.
What is your own personal favourite song?
My
favourite song seems to depend on the mood I'm in at the time. I flit
between, John Lennon's "Isolation" or "Imagine", Paul McCartney's Here,
there & Everywhere, Elvis Costello's I want you, Radiohead's Fake plastic
trees & Prince's When doves cry?! I could probably go on for pages. As
you can see, I'm not very good at favourites!
3.
Who do you feel has had the most influence on your song writing?
The
single biggest influence in my song writing would be John Lennon. The
first song I ever learned to play on the piano was "Imagine" I still play
it in my set over 20 years later. In my opinion, no one has ever been
able to write as free and honestly as John Lennon.
4.
Why would you not encourage your son to get involved with the music industry
(as previously stated)?
My
father once said to me, "This business is vicious, Only if you are 100%
passionate about making music your life, should you even think about it"
Of course, back then I had no idea what he was talking about. I do now.
Having said that, I'll encourage my son in what ever he has passion for.
Hopefully, that's accountancy!
5.
Do you ever find it difficult working with a member of your family?
I
can only presume you're asking about my brother, Jodie. The thing is,
he is my best friend. We have been doing this together since we were kids.
Since Our first band when Jodie was about 11 and I was 12, we've been
in this together, through the good times and the bad, the laughs and the
tears, he's always been there for me. We hardly ever fight. When we do,
it's usually a 12 round heavy weight title fight, but we always get through
it! To be completely honest, I couldn't do it without him. He was my best
man and I will be his in September. That just about says it all really!
6.
If you could play any venue where would it be and who would you have as
a support act?
Madison
square gardens in NY with Radiohead as support. Mind you, hard act to
follow!
7. What 3 things (not people) do you have to
have on the tour bus with you?
I
always have a picture of Casey with me, to make me smile when I need to,
my digital camera to catch all the madness for you and my mobile phone.
8. Do you think fame as a teenager has affected
your life in any negative ways?
I
did miss out on a lot of experiences that everyone else my age experienced.
Like being a student, living and learning about normal life. Of course
those days shaped my life, but they don't define me. Jodie and I had the
time of our lives, travelling the world as pop stars. We were living every
teenagers dream in many ways, but it wasn't all fun. It was very draining
at times. I'm often asked if I could do it all again, what would I do
differently. I'm not really a believer in hindsight, because everything
we experience through our lives, make us the person we are today, and
I'm happy today.
9.
On the BMI website, I notice that there are bucket loads of songs that
us fans have yet to hear. Do you have any plans to record those songs
and sell them over the Internet if they never see the light of day on
an album?
There
are so many tempting titles like "Mozarty Party" which I am eager to hear.
I have written, literally hundreds of songs over the years. That's really
what I've been doing since "back then". I totally threw myself into song
writing. I've travelled all over the world, writing with whoever will
have me and I've learned a lot from every one of them. I don't know how
many of these songs will be taken off the shelf and dusted off for your
listening pleasure, but I can say, if I get the chance I'll be releasing
a LOT more records over the next few years than the previous few!
10.
If you were to do a duet with anybody in the world, who would you like
to team up with and what song would you perform?
I would love
to work with Tom Yorke (Radiohead). I don't know if he'd have me, but
he would be my first choice! As far as the song, I would hope it would
be collaboration
11.
Which football team do you support?
West
Ham united - Claret and blue all the way!
12.
If you could act in a film about someone's life, whose would you choose?
River Phoenix
13.
You can perform one song (original or cover) for one person (dead or alive)
- which song, for whom?
Unforgettable
- for my wife
14.
If you could suddenly have a new talent what would you choose?
Painting.
I've always wanted to be a good painter. I dabble a little, but I'm not
really very good
15.
What has been the biggest change in your approach to your career in the
past 11 years?
I'm
a lot more relaxed these days. I used to get nervous and up tight, but
I have a different set of priorities now. My family will always come first,
so any success I may have in my career is a bonus for me.
16.
At what age did you start playing the guitar and what was your first guitar?
I
started playing guitar quite late really. I was 18. I started piano at
about 9, but it took me a long time to fall in love with the guitar. My
first guitar was an acoustic Ovation, which has since been snapped in
half (Accidentally!)
17.
If there was one moment in your life/career you could freeze-frame and
go back to, what would it be?
Life - the
birth of my son. Career. The moment I knew that the one and only had got
to number 1
18.
Did your father help you join the music business?
My
father was, and still is a huge in influence on my music. He wasn't really
sure about me going into the business, because he knows how hard it can
be, but there was no other way for me. He did help, in as much as he managed
me in the early days. It was always great to have him there for me. He
helped me to help myself
19.
Do you think your outlook on life has changed since you became a father,
and if so, will this be reflected in your music?
My life has
been turned around since Casey came into my life. It's funny, when you
have a child, all your priorities are put to one side. Everything that
came first in your life suddenly takes a back seat. He already has had
an influence on my writing and I'm sure he will continue to.
20.
How do you get you inspiration for your music?
Love, pain,
greed, heartache, beauty, passion, football, music, art, sex - life
21.
Will you release your single in Austria, Germany etc. as well?
I hope to.
I am working on getting my album out all over the world. Watch this space!
22.
Is it getting on your nerves when the media still mentions that you have
been No.1 with "The One and Only"?
I've gotten
used to it now. I do understand that people really only know me for the
one and only. It was such a big hit and it's very hard to follow! I do
see it as my friend now. After many years of cursing it, we've kissed
and made up!
23.
What would you have liked to have done if you didn't have talent for music
writing & performing?
It's
really hard to say. I've only ever known and wanted to make music. I guess
if I were to pick another career, I would want to be one of those guys
that blow up luggage left at airports.
24. What things make you happy, sad and angry?
My
son makes me happy (Am I sounding like a broken record?) Child abuse makes
me very sad and very angry
25.
Why do you think that things didn't go to plan back in '91 after the fantastic
start?
There
are so many reasons things didn't really go to plan. * I think I was with
the wrong record company. They had a different agenda for me (I wish they
told me about it!) * I was overexposed (Even I was sick of my face!) *
Perhaps we put out the wrong 2nd single * The media turned on me I could
go on and on, but in the end who knows?! As I said before, I don't believe
that hindsight is necessarily a good thing. Everything that I have experienced
in my life has brought me to this point, and I'm quite happy. I actually
feel like I am a more balanced person for it. I have experienced the highs
and lows of this business. The highs were very high and the lows were,
well you know the rest!
Thankyou
to everyone who sent their questions in and
thankyou to Chesney for answering them for us.
Don't
forget to send any more questions you would like to ask Ches for next
time.
Thank
you
